A testimonial from Dr L H Hiranandani attesting to the the qulity of the marble work done in Kanta building
When Padmabhushan Dr Lakhumal H Hiranandani built his home in 1958 on Little Gibbs road, Malabar Hill, he had a clear idea in his mind… We wanted to build the best house - which means the best material should be used for it.
The doctor by then was already doing groundbreaking work in the field of medicine and philanthropy. Deeply engaged in his own work, he was not aware of the best building materials in the city. Naturally, like most Indians he asked around. Who was making the best tiles in the city?
"I was told Bharat Tiles were the best, though the price of the tile is 25% more than any other very good tile manufacturers. I made some inquisitive inquiries whether the quality was really better and the persons I asked, including my architects Perin Bhiwandiwali-Ditchburn Mistry said it was worth buying Bharat Tiles by paying 25% more." he said.
Dr Hiranandani was not a wealthy man back then. Paying 25% more for tiles of Bharat meant that he had to put in more money than he had originally planned. However, he was prepared for it.
He said, "I used to earn money every week and the surplus collection was very carefully spent to construct the house. I had to work harder to pay more for the Bharat Tiles."
Almost 40 years later, Mr Hiranandani in a warm letter to Mrs. Dilnavaz Variava, Chairperson of Bharat Floorings mentioned, “These tiles are still there and really looking like marble tiles.” The six-storeyed Kanta Apartments, named after Hiranandani’s wife - Kanta, has been the family home for more than five decades. Real Estate magnate and second son of Dr. Hiranandani, Niranjan Hiranandani says, “It has a lot of fond memories. My brothers and I spent our childhood here. My children were brought up here. Every corner has its own share of feelings and sentiments attached to it and we all enjoy living here.”
