Not only limited to producing beautiful tiles, Bharat, in line with the latest design and technological developments of the 1930s, developed “Colourex” its own line of coloured cement. An innovative product available in a variety of shades, the product was manufactured out of the best and most carefully selected raw materials imported from Europe and America. Similar to the Portland Cement of the highest grade, its quality was guaranteed by the American Society for Testing Materials.
In the 1940s, Bharat Flooring and Tiles published a fascinating Colourex catalogue which provided a detailed description of its products and services geared towards Home Owners, Architects, Contractors and Building Supply Dealers. Comprising only 9 pages, it starts with a list of diverse colours in which Colorex is sold, the various uses for which it can be effectively employed for decorative purposes, specifications, and finally ending with suggestions for engineers and architects. The catalogue also provides us with a glimpse of the building process of the 1940s and 1950s when coloured cement was widely popular in the city of Bombay.
